About
This research project, led by Sandra Olga Ng, seeks to investigate the sonic heritage of Macau, a vibrant city with a rich cultural heritage, and develop a comprehensive framework for classifying, archiving, promoting, and restoring its unique soundscape. Despite the importance of sound in preserving cultural heritage, this aspect remains largely understudied. This study aims to fill this gap by conducting site-specific recording sessions at Macau's cultural and heritage landmarks or intangible heritage events, developing an innovative taxonomy and an online database featuring soundscape recordings, and 360 videos, and collaborating with local heritage institutions and experts to provide contextual information and insights on the recorded sounds.
Sounds of the Mangrove: A 3D Audio Journey (2026)
Through this interdisciplinary collaboration (ISE x FAH x Library), supported by Sands China’s “Drop by Drop” (水為善) project, our community isn’t just learning about ecology—they are living it. This is an audio installation presenting soundscapes in Mangrove area introduced along the celebration of the World Book Day (April 23) in USJ Library.
